SecurityInformation is one of the main resources the Council owns and comes in many forms both traditional and electronic. Information security can be compromised on computers and electronic devices in many ways.
Do's and Don'ts
- Do get into the habit of clicking the Lock Workstation button on the desktop or Ctrl Alt Delete even if you are going away for a short time.
- Don't write down your password. Choose a memorable password which is easy to remember but hard to crack.
- Do use a password to protect portable digital assistants (PDAs). Who can see all your emails on your IPaq?
- Don't leave sensitive documents lying around when you leave your desk, especially when you go home at night.
- Do ensure you know which printer you are using, and if necessary use a PIN number or password to pick up sensitive printouts.
- Don't unwittingly distribute personal information or email addresses in Office documents and bulk email lists.
- Don't place sensitive documents in shared folders with no access restrictions.
- Don't open email attachments from untrusted sources. They may contain viruses.
- Guard against Phishing attacks - emails purporting to come from trustworthy sources like banks or Ebay which link to fraudulent sites aiming to collect personal account details.
